Ha Long Bay – one of the most picturesque bays in the world – was twice regconized by UNESCO to be ” The World Nature Heritage” and ” The World Geological & Geomorphological Heritage”. Nature has created here a grandiose, poetic and wonderfully attractive spot.

Vung Vieng Fishing Village

Bai Tu Long and the Vung Vieng Fishing Village is off the beaten tourist track as it is not so near to the popular Cat Ba Island which has lodging, beaches and nearby caves where most of the large tour companies and boats operate

There are about 50 families; the population is between 200 and 300 residents. This includes nearly 100 children. These families have lived in this village for generations. The language is Vietnamese. The village is a “floating village.” There are no structures built on land. The village is very poor. Traditionally income for food and potable water (imported from the mainland) came solely from fishing. Now, there is some supplemental income from tourism also.

There are 4 fishing villages in the World Heritage site: Ba Hang, Cua Van, Vong Vieng and Cap La. Vong Vieng is the less touristy. After disembark the mother boat, you will be transfer by rowing boats, tender boats, or doing kayaking to enter Vong Vieng fishing village. After enter the village gate (see the picture), you have a chance to experience the villagers’ daily life as well as the traditional culture and customs of the fishermen, who live in the World Heritage Area of Halong Bay.

Their floating houses look spacious and clean. The well-off families even have tiled roof houses with radios, television sets, tables and chairs, etc. There is one community house here where villagers come to have meetings. Here is also the place tourists stopover to shop some traditional hand made items.

With the support of the tourists and travel companies like Indochina Junk, First Choice, Footprints, the village boasts a training establishment for their children. Over an area of 100m2 lies one classroom and one small room for teachers.

It is interesting to see the rambunctious children going to “school”. Their bustling calling and their flopping rowing liven up the atmosphere of the quite bay. Looking at the small boats driven by tiny oars going to school, and the radiant faces of the children, one feels confident in a bright future for the fishing village. Tourist can drop some notebooks, pens to the village children.

Cua Van- Van Gia Fishing Village

Van Gia – Cua Van is situated at Hung Thang Commune, Halong City, 20km away from the tourist boat wharf, the fishing village lies in a calm bay surrounded by mountain. Cua Van Village has a population of 733 in 176 households. They mainly earn their livelihood by fishing.

There are 4 fishing villages in the World Heritage site: Ba Hang, Cua Van, Vong Vieng and Cap La with a total of 287 households and 1,283 people of which Cua Van is the largest. This is a habitat that has maintained both a tangible and intangible marine culture.

Visiting the village, tourists have a chance to experience the villagers’ daily life as well as the traditional culture and customs of the fishermen, who live in the World Heritage Area of Halong Bay.

This makes it ideal for anchoring boats here. Their floating houses look spacious and clean. The well-off families even have tiled roof houses with radios, television sets, tables and chairs, etc.

The village boasts a training establishment for their children. Over an area of 150m2 lies four classrooms and one small room for teachers. They are the first floating classrooms in H? Long. At present, Cua Van has 7 classes, mainly in grade 1 and grade 2. The youngest pupil is 8, while the oldest one is 17.

A New Year trip to Nam Du Island

Tourists can catch a night bus at Mien Tay Coach Station at 11 p.m. to get to Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province at 5:30 a.m. the next morning. They are advised to take a sleeper bus at the fare of VND150,000 per person. After getting off the bus, they should take another car drive to Ngoc Thanh motorboat pier where they book a boat ride for VND205,000 per person to Nam Du Island. The boat with a seating capacity of 100 passengers departs at 8:05 a.m. and arrives at the island at 10:30 a.m. Many visitors find it comfortable to travel in a smooth and air-conditioned boat trip. Sunset is worth seeing on the island

Nam Du has a chain of 21 islets and is seen as Halong Bay of southern Vietnam. The first destination is Cu Tron, one of the biggest islets of Nam Du, which has the biggest population in Nam Du and hostels for guests to stay overnight. For instance, Thuy Kiep hostel has air-conditioning, wifi, and water heater. It also serves delicious seafood at good prices, including small crab, oyster, fish and squid and hotpot, and especially fried fish rice.

After lunch, tourists should visit Hai Bo Dap Islet to swim, dive and catch sea urchins and snails. The next destination is Mau Islet where fresh and delicious crab and fish can be found. Sunset on the island is worth seeing as it is beautiful. Tourists are recommended to join local fishermen in an exciting squid fishing trip or enjoy fresh seafood at Hien Hau or Ven Dong eatery.

Tourists can rent a car or a motorbike for VND120,000 per person to have a nice tour around the island. Men beach is the most beautiful place on Nam Du with lines of coconut trees, clear water, and no waves.
